Comparing the Best UK Broadband Packages
There are so many broadband packages being available in the UK it can become confusing what broadband plan is going to be right for you. So before you start comparing providers it is a good idea to have an understanding of the type of broadband that will suit your needs.
Different Types of Broadband
Below given are some of the common broadband types available in the UK:
- Standard (ADSL) Broadband – Is often the cheapest broadband service available. Though you are limited by the speed it can deliver. You can still stream, browse the web, and do all the things that you can with a fibre broadband connection. However, if you live in a multi-user household you can start to run into speed issues. Standard broadband is best suited to lighter online usage or homes with 1-2 people.
- Fibre Broadband – As a nation we are consuming more of the content view online. With the likes of Netflix, Britbox, Disney+ and on-demand steaming. As a result, you will often find that you need a boost in speed for your broadband connection. Fibre broadband does just that and provides you with speeds that you cannot get with standard ADSL broadband. Households that use steam lots of content on multiple devices particularly high definition content or have multiple users using the internet at the same time should choose a fibre broadband plan.
- Cable Broadband – Is often confused with fibre broadband however slight differences in the cabling between the exchange and your home allows cable broadband providers to provide a much faster service than fibre broadband providers. Unless you live in an area that provides fibre to the home which can provide speeds up to 1 Gbps. The only national provider for cable broadband is Virgin Media. However, there are some smaller cable providers in certain areas of the UK.
You should hopefully have a better idea of the different types of broadband available within the UK. However what broadband service should you choose?
What Broadband Speed do I Need?
Our broadband experts have produced a handy table to help you determine the type of broadband user you are, and what broadband speed you’ll need. Which should help guide you in what is the best broadband package for you.
1 Person | 2-4 People | 4+ People |
---|---|---|
Look for at least 10Mbps | Look for at least 36Mbps | Look for at least 66Mbps or higher |
Video streaming Web browsing Online gaming | 4K video streaming Online gaming Multiple users at once | 4K video streaming Working from home Large downloads Online gaming |
Unless you live in a poor broadband speed area or like to stream in ultra-high definition, then even standard broadband will cope with all the major streaming services such as the likes of Netflix.
Broadband Average Speed Meaning
You’ll notice that all broadband packages are advertised displaying an average speed. The average speed is the speed that 50% of the broadband provider’s customers receives at peak times.
When signing up for a broadband service you’ll be provided with an estimate on the speed you will receive as this will vary depending on the circumstances in the area that you live. The broadband provider will inform you of the minimum speed that you will receive.
If you are not getting the speeds you should contact your broadband provider to see if any issues are affecting your service.
Broadband Contracts
Nearly all broadband service will require a
- Can I cancel mid Contract?
- When signing up to a broadband service provider, you’ll be committing yourself to a minimum contract length (typically 18 months). During this period you are generally cannot change service provider unless you pay an exit fee. The exit fee is generally the remaining months left that you have on your contract.
- There are exceptions, however: If you are BT, EE, Plusnet, Sky, TalkTalk, Utility Warehouse or Virgin Media and are not getting the speeds that you should be then they all signed up to Ofcom’s minimum speed guarantee this means that if they cannot fix your speed within 30-days they will allow you exit the contract with no exit frees.
- Will My Broadband Price Rise?
- While you are within your broadband contract you shouldn’t see any price rises above the RPI (the rate of inflation). If you do see price rises above-inflation, Ofcom rules allow you to exit your contract with no penalty.
- Once your contract term ends (say after 18-months) it is important to remember that any promotional deals may end and you could be paying a much higher price. When you nearing the end of your contract, contact your broadband provider and try to negotiate a better deal or consider switching.
Will I need a credit check?
Signing up for broadband will usually entail a credit check. Your chosen provider will often carry out what is called a soft-check. Soft checks don’t affect your credit score. Hence you shouldn’t have any issues if you have just moved home.
Can I get Broadband Without Line Rental?
Nearly all broadband connections require a landline to get connected. In most cases these days the cost is included within the package. Most broadband landlines will allow you to ‘bolt on’ call packages. Making it more economical for those that use their landline regularly. For those that don’t make calls from their landline you only pay for calls if you choose to use your home phone.
How Easy Is it To Switch Broadband Provider?
Nearly everything can be done online, even switching broadband provider has become easier than ever before. Generally when you switch to most broadband providers. Your new provider will be handling everything for you. So all you need to do select the broadband package, your new provider will provide you with a switching date and contact your old provider to let them know that you are leaving.
If you’re switching from a cable broadband provider like Virgin Media, then you will need to let them know yourself as soon as your new provider has confirmed your activation date. Virgin Media will often require around 30 days’ notice.
Your existing service will then be cancelled the day your new broadband provider goes live.
