BT sells broadband over the Openreach network its parent company owns: part-fibre (FTTC) packages around 36 to 67 Mbps, and Full Fibre packages from about 74 Mbps up to 900 Mbps where FTTP is available. Because dozens of providers resell the same Openreach lines, a slow BT connection is usually about the line and technology at your address, not BT specifically.
Check whether you are testing over Wi-Fi (especially through walls), whether others in the house are streaming or downloading, and whether you are on an older FTTC package when Full Fibre is now available at your address. A wired test next to the Smart Hub gives the true picture.
BT’s Full Fibre range is sold with average download speeds of roughly 74, 150, 300, 500 and 900 Mbps. If a wired test is consistently well below your package’s advertised average, BT’s speed guarantee may entitle you to money back or a penalty-free exit.
