Sky broadband runs mainly over the Openreach network: Superfast (FTTC) packages around 61 Mbps, and full-fibre packages from roughly 100 Mbps up to 900 Mbps where available (Sky also uses CityFibre in some areas). As with all Openreach-based providers, the technology reaching your address matters far more than the brand on the bill.
Common causes: testing over Wi-Fi at range, an older Sky Hub on a faster line, peak-time congestion on FTTC connections, or a legacy package when full fibre is now available at your address. Run a wired test, or test standing next to the hub, before assuming a fault.
Sky is signed up to Ofcom’s broadband speeds code of practice. If your line consistently underperforms the guaranteed minimum you were quoted at sign-up, and Sky can’t fix it within 30 days, you can leave penalty-free.
If you are out of contract, you are probably paying more than new customers. Compare what’s available at your postcode, full fibre from another provider may now be faster and cheaper than your current Sky package.
