Could you get faster broadband than Virgin Media?

Speeds depend on your street, not just your provider. Enter your postcode to see every provider and speed available at your address.

What speed should I get with Virgin Media?

Virgin Media runs its own cable (DOCSIS) network, separate from Openreach, with packages from around 132 Mbps up to gigabit speeds, and is upgrading areas to full fibre. Cable download speeds are among the fastest in the UK in Ofcom’s measurements, but upload speeds are much lower than download, which matters for video calls and cloud backups.

Why is my Virgin Media broadband slow?

Wi-Fi is the usual bottleneck on fast cable lines. A 500 Mbps package can easily read as 80 Mbps over Wi-Fi in another room, so test wired if possible. Peak-time slowdowns in your area and an overdue Hub restart are the other common causes.

Why is my Virgin Media upload speed so low?

That is a limitation of cable (DOCSIS) technology rather than a fault. Upload is a fraction of download on Virgin’s cable network. If upload matters to you, full-fibre providers offer symmetric or near-symmetric speeds.

Is anything faster than Virgin Media in my area?

Increasingly, yes. Full-fibre providers now match or beat cable speeds in many areas, often with faster uploads and lower prices. Enter your postcode to see what has been built to your address.
