OVO took on a broadband business almost by accident. In January 2020 it completed the purchase of SSE Energy Services, SSE's retail arm, and the deal carried across not just around 3.5 million energy customers but the broadband and phone accounts sitting alongside them.
For a period OVO ran that service, first under the SSE name and later under its own. It was never the company's focus. OVO is an energy supplier, and broadband had come as part of a larger transaction rather than a deliberate move into telecoms. The SSE Broadband brand was retired in 2021.
OVO Energy itself continues to trade as one of the larger UK energy suppliers. It is only the broadband service that is no longer sold, which is why this entry exists: it is where SSE Broadband customers ended up, and it closes off a lineage that would otherwise stop with a company that never sold broadband at all.
